MACC interviews aide
PUTRAJAYA: For his interview with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Wong Chuan How, a special assistant to a state executive council member, had his lawyers present as observers and was allowed breaks.
There was also a closed-circuit television in the interview room, said Wong’s lawyer and Bukit Kepa-yang assemblyman Cha Kee Chin.
Wong arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 8.45am yesterday accompanied by relatives, friends and his two lawyers, Cha and Seremban MP John Fernandez.
The Selangor state government also sent two lawyers for Wong.
They were Amir Khusyairi Mohd Tanusi and Imran Hadzalie Abdul Hamid.
He used a walker as he had been hurt during a scuffle last week when MACC officers attempted to arrest him in Klang.
Wong is the special assistant to Selangor executive council member Ronnie Liu.
Cha said the conditions of the interview were favourable — except that they were denied their own interpreter and the lawyers, who were watching from outside the interview room were not allowed to counsel Wong. An MACC officer was appointed as the Chinese interpreter as Wong was more fluent in Man-darin.
“The interview was conducted in a professional way,” Cha told reporters yesterday.
The interview started at 11am after several statements were recor-ded, added Cha.
Cha and Fernandez gave a press conference at noon. Cha said MACC could charge Wong for criminal breach of trust under Section 18 and 23 of the Anti-Corruption Act and Penal Code 405.
Section 18 dealt with an offence of an agent intending to deceive; and Section 23 concerned the use of office or position for gratification. Penal Code 405 meanwhile touched on a criminal breach of trust.
When asked why MACC wanted to charge Wong with the said charges, Cha replied the matter was still under investigation.
Cha said when MACC officers served Wong with a notice informing him of the charges he would be facing, Wong refused to sign the acknowledgement sheet as he claimed he did not fully comprehend the notice written in Bahasa Malaysia.
At 4pm, Cha said Wong insisted on finishing the interview instead of stopping at 6pm and be held in remand for the interview to continue today.
As of 9pm last night, Wong was still inside the MACC building while his friends and family waited outside.
